OK, so she might have been able to buy the ingredients more cheaply, but the ingredients you've listed would make a few sandwiches nevertheless. Now if she'd gone to Pret or Eat to buy 3 or 4 sandwiches she'd probably have spent at £12. So, she's saved money. It may not be as much as an OS-er would achieve but it's moneysaving nevertheless. And isn't that what it's all about?

Whilst I don't shop at M&S what does worry me about some value meat is where does it come from? i can't afford to buy all free range and organic but I wonder whether some of the very cheap meat is either stuff imported or has extremely poor welfare for the animals involved. OK I wouldn't pay £3.99 for ham unless it was BOGOF but I am wary of paying too little for meat.

Still at least she didn't waste too much money on M&S tasteless ready made sandwiches.

I'm like you, I won't buy value meat because of the quality but I also won't pay 4 quid for a pack of ham!! I usually get something in between the two!

  • I agree, I wouldn't pay £4 for 4 slices of ham either but I would rather do without than buy 'value' ham or other cheap processed meat of unknown origin. And even at the prices quoted she would probably get 4 sandwiches/ rolls of much better quality than buying 4 ready made ones which would cost even more, after all it only takes a few minutes to make a sandwich and most of the shop bought ones are pretty awful apart from places like Pret a Manger which are not cheap. And as Bitsy Beans said - at least she didn't spend even more money on M&S (or Tesco, Boots etc) tasteless ready made sandwiches.
At least it's a step in the right direction and who knows in a few weeks or months time she might be bringing in her own homemade sandwiches made with homebaked breadmaker bread and with more reasonably priced fillings - free range egg and cress or cheese and chutney or whatever........
