Somewhere like Viking Direct should have what you want, possibly Staples.

We have a recycling centre where they sell office stuff. I bought a filing cabinet there and 50 suspension files for 10p each. Try Yellow pages.

    Hi frankie,

I used to work in the office furniture industry. The inserts are basically a piece of rigid bent metal that tend to be rounded at the top to allow the files to slide easily. You also want the rails to be no wider than about 2mm thick so that the files don't get stuck. There are probably 101 things around the home you could adapt to meet this use, or get something that can be adapted or cut to size from a Wickes/B&Q type store. The main thing is it needs to be thin and rigid. If you can get these two criteria you should be fine. Also, if the blanket box is very long, you may want to do it in two or three sections so that the metal doesn't bow.

Alternatively you could cannibalise an old cabinet, but it may be difficult to get the right size inserts for what you are after as filing tends to be made to standard sizes.

  • I know I have seen frames in filing cabinets for suspension files, I will see if I can get my hands on some
