or are these applications illegal?
Since the EU Copyright Directive was passed (mainly at the behest of Britain and the US, I might add), using tools to "defeat technological protection" of copyrighted material has become illegal. The EUCD is analogous to the prior US version, the infamous Digital Millenium Copyright Act (DMCA), but worse.
A bunch of us geeks tried defeating it, but we didn't have enough political clout, and Joe Public didn't care.0 -

We have been asked not to discuss these issues on this site. By disrespecting this request you can expect to have the post deleted. There are other sites on the internet you can go to in order to discuss these issues but we have been repeatedly asked not to use this site to discuss them.Torgwen.....................

Fran, how enlightened to respond to my reasoned, informative post with a call for censorship! I could point out the regimes that would be proud of you, but I fear the conversation would degenerate further.
When something is clearly legal, how can it be "abuse" to discuss it?0 -
chrb,
Thanks for the clear explanation. I would like to say I was aware of the full legal position before repeating the recommendation of the Russian site (just kidding)Before you buy Google Nest or British Gas Hive check out ESPproMon the Android and iOS Smartphone app that helps you build the same system from just £30.0 -

I am confident that Martin will have enough legal knowledge to know that chrb's comments are sensible and wholly appropriate to THIS site.
Chrb,
I have your post stored in my notebook just in case it get's pulled. I will ensure the 'community' is made aware of your VALUABLE comments. Suggest we all recoomend you for September's post of the month. Fran wrote:Everything is subject to censorship of the moderators on a website. Martin has chosen not to have it discussed as is his right and he operates through his "Abuse Controllers". You are abusing the requests made by the owner not to post and it will be deleted.
A forum is a medium for communication and the dissemination of ideas. Whilst what you say sounds reasonable, how would you feel if a moderator were to edit your posts, so that they no longer reflected what you said, and might even suggest something you find terrible? See, your argument also applies there, "it's their site and they can do what they want", but suddenly it's not quite so reasonable is it?0 -
Besides, my original point still stands. If it were illegal to buy from a service based in Russia, then it would also be illegal to buy from a service based in the USA, and so every post recommending US based sites should also be removed.
Is that seriously what you are suggesting? That every post about non-European Union based music sites be removed?0 -
MSE_Controller2 wrote:The problem is that any discussion of these sites in a thread called "cheapest legal downloads" can give the impression that these are legal in this country when it is still a grey area. We are presently updating the FAQ to give clearer rules on the subject, but for now I would ask that russian sites and P2P are not discussed in this topic.

We have never stressed eitherway whether these sites are legal or not. This is not an open forum and members have to respect the wishes of the site owner, which are that these sites are not discussed here. I have repeated this more than once in this thread. If people continue linking to these sites we will have to consider withdrawing their ability to do so.
