How do I keep mud out of the house?

We live in a rural area and have free ranging chickens...which means we are constantly going out to tend to them and constantly bringing mud in the house even though we take off our boots in the utility room.

Do those special door mats that claim to absorb mud actually work?
Are there any other ideas please?

thanks

  • i had one once but it didnt seem to do the trick!we put newspaper on the floor inside before we went out, we would still take our boots of at the door but if we got any mud on the newspaper we would pick it up and put it in the bin! if its not wet mud you can reuse the newspaper! Hope this helps Ash xx

Can you swill your wellies off in a water bath/trough or something outside the door before you come into the house?

We had terrible trouble with the dogs bringing mud into the house. We've ended up making them walk down a gravel path before they can get back into the house. We also have washable door mats that pick up any residue.

It's by no means perfect, but much, much better than it used to be.

I use an old bath towel.. It can easilly be picked up at the end of the day for washing - or shaken outside and turned over. They are really absorbent, so do a very good job. Also, they are large enough to leave boots on, and for the dog to be trained to lie down on for a few moments before shaking himself alover the kitchen.... In really bad weather - I have one towel outside on the step, and one inside. Its amazing how much mud they pick up. Old bath mats work well too.

    Good luck!
