Hi there,
We are thinking of moving to Bridlington from Harrogate.
I suffer from Chronic Asthma and osteoporosis, and would love a bungalow by the sea,
I would appreciate if anyone could tell us about the facilities in the area.
Thanks.

    I've been Money Tipped!
    Bizarre!

Was just about to start a similar thread...we're holidaying in Bridlington next week with kids aged 3yr,2yr,20m, 3m.

Wanted to see if anyone knew a good child friendly swimming pool in the area? Also a good soft play place?

And any other preschooler friendly attractions in the area...happy to drive up to 1hr to get somewhere good.

    Thanks

    For swimming there's Leisure World.
It's got a full size pool, a learner pool and then a big pool with wave machine and slides etc.
    All indoors so all weathers.
I'm not sure about a soft play area, although Leisure World may have one too.
There's a few very good ones in Scarborough which is 30 minutes away, these are Little Hoppers(A64, 3 miles from Town Centre) or PlayZone in the town centre itself.
  • Hi, my mum moved to Brid about a year ago and is very happy there, I used to live in Scarborough and worked in Brid last year so will answer as best I can.
Brid has a Tesco (with petrol) and a Morrisons (with petrol) as its main supermarkets. Train station so you don't have to drive everywhere.
Scarborough is half an hours drive away (depending on getting stuck behind caravans or not), Whitby just over an hour (with Robin Hoods bay just before it).
Just outside Brid at Carnaby is John Bulls world of rock where you can do a factory tour to watch sweets being made.
There's Sewerby Hall just on the top of Brid which has an animal zoo thingy alongside the hall with exotic birds, penguins, wallabies and more. You can buy bird food to feed them too.
At Scarborough there's the sealife centre to visit, great for littluns (spend a long time there if you can as the tickets are quite expensive but it is a good day out, we took our boy at 3 months old there and he loved it). There's jellyfish, sharks, otters, penguins, seals and feeding/feeling pools.
There's also the castle at Scarborough which is great if they have lots of energy (loads of places to run round) and the weathers good.
Just north of Brid is Flamborough (if they're walking ok as you need to either go down steps to the beach at the head or down a ramp at north/south sides) with caves/rockpools to explore and boat trips to go on. Also danes dyke just before flamborough is a pretty bay to play in when the weathers nice with woods to explore if you're the outdoor type.
Sadly Kinderland is no more which used to be great for kids.
Not sure about swimming pools, sorry.
As for living there, its often known as Scarboroughs poor cousin but I like it. It's often quieter than Scarborough so more room on the beach! Fewer hills if you struggle with walking. The roads can get very busy in the summer as you can imagine but you're not far from two major hospitals at Scarborough or Hull (about 1 hour away)
The college is about to be rebuilt if you ever want to do any evening classes, the library's up to date.
All I can think of at the minute but no doubt people who live there know more than me!

From what I know as I live in Scarborough the hospital there is much bigger than Brids

Scarborough is much more hilly than Brid, Brid in quite flat and the beaches are longer too so less crowded. Dont know about Brid but Scarborough has had a lot of investment over recent years and its still going on at North bay, as it has a north and south bay divided by Marine drive

Not sure on house prices in Brid but in Scarborough you can get a decent 3 bed semi from around £150k-£180k

Flamborough is about 15-20 mins drive from Brod to the North between Scarborough and Brid, its a very steep climb down to the rocks though
  • I live in the East Riding, and have alot of of family in Brid and Flamborough. They're both lovely places, but can be short on amenities. Leisure world (accessed from the prom on Brid main beach) is great for the kiddies, as long as they keep out the arcades (no money saving to be had there!)

At Hull, there is The Deep which is an underwater aquarium built into the Humber Estuary (it's nicer than it sounds!) which is really great for kids, with lots of 6-12yr ish activities and many accessible tanks that kids in buggies can see. (and if you go to Hull, visit the 'market man' at the indoor market - very very cheap food).

There are plenty of play areas in brid, but unless you know the area, its pointless me telling you where. Best just to ask around as the people are very friendly (and people at the place you stay should know).

In regards to a Bungalow by the sea, i would say Flamborough is a better bet (somewhere around Thronwick bay maybe? its nowhere near as steep as North/South Landing) as brid seafront and streets near to it is all hotels, bar a small area at the north end. However, Flamborough doesn't have a supermarket (as far as I can remember) so if travel distance is important, factor it in.

Regading Preschooler activities, there is a children's centre in brid which does drop in play sessions and the like but you may have to be a member, im not sure. There a model village in brid, and an animal farm visiting thing in Driffield (about 10 miles away i think). Brid Harbour is nice, with really good fish and chips and great seafood shops.

Further afield there is flamingoland zoo, or the york walls and railway museum (great for my 3 yr old brother who's into trains in a big way!)

Thats all I can think of now, if you need any more advice or help, dont hesitate to get in touch)
