Mortgage for non-UK resident moving back
despairing
I was wondering if anyone has any experience of applying for mortgages in the UK when not resident in the UK. We're moving to the UK and have put an offer in on a property but are having problems finding a mortgage lender who is prepared to make us an offer. I am British but my husband is from Luxembourg so has no credit history in the UK.
Any ideas?
Thanks.

Plenty lenders should be able to look at this for you.
The credit crunch problems mean tighter lending criteria, but you can still get a mortgage at high street rates.
I'd suggest having a word with a whole of market adviser first before putting in any further offers, as you need to make sure you can get a mortgage in the first place.
What purchase price are you looking at? What deposit do you have? WHat are your incomes?
Being from Luxembourg should not be a problem seeing as they are an EU membe stateI am a Mortgage AdviserYou should note that this site doesn't check my status as a Mortgage Adviser, so you need to take my word for it. Herb - are you sure?
No credit history is the problem here and most lenders will want at least 3 years traceability on UK credit systems.
HSBC might be worth a try0 -

Hi, I was in the same position a few weeks as you as my husband and I are non British and we called many lenders but were turned down due to residency status.
HSBC will definitely take you as we have a formal mortgage offer from FirstDirect and I have had other (non British) friends who just had their mortgages approved from FirstDirect. But I am not sure if banking with them for 3 years helped.
Alternatively, we are now in the process of going through London and Country for a mortgage with Intelligent Finance. They have accepted all our paperwork and it seems like they are waiting for us to return a signed doc and they will process the mortgage offer.

I haven't been able to get into the forum until now since posting my inquiry.
Thank you for your replies - we're waiting to hear on whether Halifax have actually accepted us - we've got 50% deposit so they're considering us. To be honest, we've given up if that fails and have sourced a loan in luxembourg to cover the other 50% of the house price with a view to getting the house mortaged once we're resident and with more of a credit history.
Thanks for the advice.0
