Should my tax code change....

Hi there

I am currently on maternity leave and my partner left when i was pregnant. I got three months full pay then the last 5 months have been smp. I am now being paid again and return to work next month so since i had my son i have had roughly 4 months of full pay.
My question is, years ago i worked in payroll and i remember a single mother notifying me of her 'discounted' tax code. Should I have told the tax office about my circumstances, would it make a difference to my contributions or would the working tax credits do that? Also, if i should have notified them, will they back date it??

Thanks
Diane

No , the days of an allowance for single parents through the tax code are long gone. It would, as you say, affect your entitlement to tax credits.
