Hi folks,

Need to replace the internal doors in my house and I have seen some 4 panel knotty pine doors at b@q for £20 which seems a good price. Anyone have any experience of these?

I have also been quoted £50 per door to fit door with all the trimmings architrave and also a new door frame so that everything matches. Obviosuly I will have to buy everything. Does this sound reasonable?

many thanks

tina

I know that pine doors can shrink quite a lot so i'd be a little wary of particularly cheap ones.

I paid £25 a door just to have them hung and handles, so if someone is doing the surrounds etc too, then that sounds ok.

I put these in my old house. You need to leave them in your house to 'settle' for a while once you get them as they will swell/shrink accoring to the temperature and conditions in your house before applying varnish. Even then, we noticed a large degree of change in them between summer and winter and they never really properly fitted the door frames...they would be draughty at times and nearly impossible to close at others and a couple of them warped quite badly.

In my current house, we went for better quality doors and have had no such problems.

Are you sure the price includes a new door frame? This could make quite a bit of damage to the walls

If these are the same as the ones I saw then be careful, the pine is a very thin veneer which means the doors cannot be trimmed to fit by more than a few mm. It does state on the package how much.

In the end I bought mine from ebay for £10. I was lucky.

Just had 4 of these doors fitted only no new frames, including supplying my handles and 2 stainless hinges on each door. Price £110 for all 4. It took a whole day to have them fitted. Also had fitted loft ladder £40 for that I supplied MDF for new loft door, catches came with ladder. All labour only

They can be trimmed but both sides. My bathroom door was narrow compared with 3 bedrooms so he trimmed at each side

Dont buy handles from B&Q I got same handles for £7 instead of £29. Hinges I got from Ebay

    I live In England btw

Thanks for that poppycat (and your suggestion in other thread for mat for laminate flooring)

Someone told me about these doors warping and joints splitting once heat hits them and being made cheaply in far east, but I suppose you cant believe everything you hear.

Just store them flat before you have them fitted. I asked the joiner about them warping and he said manufacturers just have these warnings to cover themselves

Just get 2 heavy duty hinges. I got them from Ebay and they were a good price

They are just wood that is stuck together I assume with glue and heat. They aren't bad doors actually. I have yet to wax them thats the finish we are having on them, brush was (Ronseal)

We got the B&Q doors you mentioned for a new build and all of them split. They were a disaster. When we contacted B&Q we were first asked how many hinges we had put on them. We had put 3 which they said was the correct way to hang them. They then said that they would be removing the handles and hinges to make sure they had been varnished inside any cuts to the wood. They also wanted to check the top and bottom to make sure they had been varnished after they had been planed. We hadn't done this so they would not refund or replace the doors. About 3 months after hanging them we replaced them all.

Sorry, but did you just ignore everything that everyone said about the potential of them splitting / warping / shrinking, then thank the one person who told you what you wanted to hear?

    Hi again everybody,

Naw I have taken on board everything I have read and thank you all sincerely for your advice about these doors. I have now decided to get more expensive 4 panel doors mahogany ones from a local door company cost £85 each as I feel they will be better in long run and I wont worry as much about them splitting.

    thanks again to everyone
