SA for CIS Self Employed - Help PLEASE

I do my husband’s SA and have done for a couple of years.

Previous years have only been for a couple of months at a time of SE the remainder being employment. So the returns have only ever been very basic returns i.e.: nothing much in the way of receipts/expenditure.

This year 07/08 is a full year of SE and I have ensured my husband has kept everything relating to his work receipt wise, etc.

I was just wondering if someone could just give me a brief overview of what if any of his receipts he can claim. I know the basics work wear, tools etc... However, I wondered if there is anything I was missing before I throw any of these receipts and not claim for them.

My husband has worked for the same contractor all year alongside the same people who claim to have received £1000+ back on their returns. However, my husband’s have only ever been £100+ if that.

Therefore I just wanted to ensure there was nothing I was missing that he is entitled to claim for, after all the taxman earns enough from us and needless to say the SA helpline haven't been very forthcoming at helping me nor hmrc.gov.uk (Mind field!) .

Thanking in advance!!!

Hi just a couple of things off the top of my head. If your OH is self employed his office is your home so if he travels to DIFFERENT job sites all milage is business millage at 40 pence per mile up to 10,000 miles (I think but check HMRC site) then 25 pence per mile. So if he travelled 10k miles that 400 pounds in milage he can take from the business tax free.

Your office expenses should be a couple of hundred per year ( mailing invoices , faxes etc)
I have a small Ltd company and these deductions are approved by my accountant.

If you have itemised billing all BUSINESS calls can be claimed as expenses and taken out of profits tax free to lower tax bill etc.
Just a question of is the money saved worth the effort. Only you can decide

Thank you for your help. He cannot claim any mileage because the contractor supplies transport. I never thought about the office side of things, because I do it all from home. Thank you again for taking the tinme to reply
