debt letter

:confused: hi
i have just recieved a letter from a debt company which this is the first time i have received a letter from anyone about this debt ,i need sme advise this debt is from seeboard in my old married name now i have not had electricity in my name for over eight years in my prev home , its also addressed to my old name so what can i do about it

    I believe if a debt is over 6 years old it basically is null and void. Not 100% on this but I'm sure someone will be along soon to confirm it. I personally wouldn't respond to it and see what happens, I think they are just trying their luck to see if you know your rights or not (a lot of people don't).

    You could also try the bankruptcy forum on here, loads of experts in there.

    Basically, until you are clued up do not do anything. Do not acknowledge the debt in any way, do not speak to the company on the phone, just politely tell them to put it in writing.

    I think if you google debt statued barred which means if a debt is over 6 years aslong as you do not acknowledge it then it is not collectable.
