What to wear at a Hindu wedding?

My friend has sprung a wedding invite on me for a Sunday 13th April and my problem is that my husband and I will be the only non Asian persons at the wedding and I don't know what to wear when all the other women will be wearing lovely sari's.
Please help, FiFi

  • Couldn't you wear a sari too? :)

Or you could check out the high street for a smart kaftan style top...there will be lots about with it coming summer :)

Wear whatever you like but avoid black and white. My sister-in-law in a Hindu, and there was every outfit imaginable at their wedding. I wore a sari-suit thing (sorry don't know the name) It's a skirt and a top, and a scarf. try Asian shops to see if you can get one as they are wearable elsewhere, but still Indian.
  • Hi FiFi Mad Mum

I was at a Hindu wedding in February and i wore a long Fuchsia beaded dress from Monsoon(sale).
I was so so glad chose this when i saw all the beautiful ladies in their saris.

Definately black is a no no.
    Have a good time!!!

Wear something ornate and colourful. I've been to lost of Asian weddingds and non-Asian stand out most because of the drab colours and plainess of the clothes. Also a long dress or skirt and top would look better than trousers as most Asian clothes for women are very feminine. Also, do avoid red and gold as that is the traditional combination for an Asian bride. You could look online for an Asian suite (spelt shalwar kameez - long kaftan style top and loose trousers) or Sari. It always looks gret when people make an effort and it does look so gorgeous to be so dressed up.

We recently attended a Hindu wedding at which there were around 20 non-Asians.

The Asian male guests mainly (apart from close family) wore normal suits, as did most of the non-Asian male guests.

The non-Asian female guests wore a variety of dresses/suits/whatever, some of which were fairly restrained and some of which were not! I would suggest wearing something fairly "decent" but honestly anything sensible should be acceptable.

would second the monsoon dress idea, or something a little heavier than your normal dress. You will feel more comfortable and think of it as a great opportunity to wear something very glam!

  • Thankyou for your replies. My problem was compounded by the fact we were on holiday for a week in Northumberland and I had no internet access and also no idea where in Newcastle to get Asian clothing, I would have known if I was in Glasgow. I think I looked in every shop in the Metro Centre and at Royal Quays Outlets, my impression is that we aren't meant to look smart as 98% of the clothes were t-shirts and jeans, I ended up buying 1 black and 1 white linen skirts and a turquoise blouse as possibles. When we got home I dashed straight out to our local shopping centre then to Braehead and then the large supermarkets (desperate). When I got home I tried on the turguoise top but it wasn't dressy enough and a look in my wardrobe found a white linen halter top, never worn from Next. I eventually logged on here on Sunday morning to read Black and White were taboo - AAAAGH! Desperate dash to my sisters to see if she had anything but decided I would have to wear the white top and black skirt, went to wedding feeling like a lamb to the slaughter, my DH was smart in his kilt. Didn't feel to bad as it was just a meal and only lasted 2 hours but would have felt worse if it was a longer event and I did notice one white sari and one black sari.
