I'm not very up on IT and all the lingo so please bear with me.
Basically I have Virgin Broadband, a Belkin router and a Dell laptop.
I hooked it all up 2 weeks ago and never had a problem with it. But last few days pretty much everytime i turn the lap top on or log on after i have closed it i lose connection to the internet. It shows connected to the wireless router but is unable to connect to the internet.
When i go to my Dell wireless WLAN card utility and the diagnostic section and run a connection diagnostic it come sup with either failed on either Gateway IP PIng or Internet IP Ping.
Only way to fix it is to unplug modem and router.
Any ideas why it keeps doing this?
Cheers,
Ben

Well, as you know, it is your router that syncs up and logs on to the Internet, and not your computer.
So your routers connection to the Internet shouldn't be affected by anything your laptop is doing.
First of all, I'd take wireless out of the picture. Connect your laptop to the router with a LAN cable - you probably got one with the router.
If problems still persist, then it's unlikely anything is wrong with your laptop.
I'd then double check you have your router configured correctly.
Do you have a Virgin ADSL or Cable connection?
What model is the router?0 -
I have same set-up: Virgin - Belkin - Dell
I know what you mean it happens to me occasionaly (once a week or so). Whenever it happens I can still access the router (192.168.1.1) and when refreshing the connection status it will come back as disconnected. Trying to reconnect through the router software won't work.
I'll also add it's not just the Dell laptop, the desktop too will still be connected to the network but not the internet.
So...I think it's got to be the router.
The only answer I've found is the one you already have...the good old technology cliche...turn it off and on again :rolleyes:In a small town south of the border, where men are men and women need a sense of humour.0 -
have the same problem sometimes after windows update. It appears I have suddenly lost my IP address.
Select internet explrer and choice "Diagnose CONNECTION PROBLEM" sometimes resolves this (I am using vista)Once you run the diagnose con prob let it run, but you will have to refresh or F5 the site before it goes to a web site.
Also always bear in mind that rebooting a laptop is not the same as rebooting a desktop as the battery power is still technichally connected.
It is always worth removing power supply and battery pack to ensure a full power down.
Example being A friend of my son was told the reason his laptop screen did not have any life was due to a faulty screen.quoted £250 plus
I had the machine for 40 seconds and fixed it.Simply removed the power and battery.Be ALERT - The world needs more LERTS0 -
If you get nowhere then reset your router to factory default settings and re enter ISP details etc .

Would your router by chance be the DG834GSP Netgear?
I too had a similar problem with my Virgin internet. The DG834GSP is locked by Virgin and has their own settings in place which are not that great. It works and all, but it's not very quick at assigning IP's (DHCP), and tends to loose dynamic IP's from time to time, to get around the problem, I turned DHCP OFF in the router settings, and fixed the IP's on my machines.
