Claiming fuel allowances from the taxman.

I work 24 hour shifts for a shipping company. 8 hiurs in the office and the rest of my duty from home where I have set up an office. I then hand over at work to a collegue in the morning. I know I cannot claim mileage travelling to and from work but when I am going to my office at home and returning next morning, I am still on duty and so think I can class this as business mileage. We have no facilities for me to carry out my full 24 hour duty at work (ie eating facilities, kitchen, rest areas etc) so in my mind am travelling from one office to another. Does anybody have the same predicament and think the taxman would reimburse my mileage ?:mad:

So do you actually work for 24 hours straight (is that even legal?), or are you just on-call for the 16 hours you are at home?

Business mileage is not a black and white issue and I'm not sure of the line the HMRC would take on this. There is extensive guideance on their website which you might want to look at:

You could also try calling them to discuss it without giving your name or NI number.
FYI the HMRC would not reimburse your mileage in any case - if the travel is accepted as business mileage this means that you get a tax deduction of 40p per business mile (for the first 10,000 miles) which you use to reduce the level of your employment income subject to income tax.
