I think its a big ask to provide a BBQ for 40 at just over £1 per head!!... I had one for a birthday on Sat for 15 family members and the meat cost £20 thats was butchers burgers and sausages and chicken for kebabs though but at £1 per head its asking a lot.. I think you'll spend much more even going for the cheaper options and thats before you start on any desserts..

You really will struggle to cook for 40 people on 2 disposable bbqs! I'd save the money and do bbq stlye food in the oven and eat in the garden.

Ask people to contribute nibbles crisps/ dips or desserts aswell as booze. Make a couple of salads inc something carby like potato or pasta to fill everyone up.

Cheaper sausages can be enlived with a sticky glaze of honey/ mustard/ soy/ sweet chilli etc. Chicekn wings can be marinaded and roasted and are cheap and yum.

    Good luck!!

we have a largish bbq pretty much every week as were the only ones of a group of friends with a garden. To save a bit of cash we also make a lot of jacket potatos (59p aldi) a large bowl of salad (again aldi, cucumber, lettuce, tomato, peppers, spring onions, grated carrot, sweetcorn, depending whats on offer). Sainsburys deli can also be good for deals, fresh burgers at the end of the day are often reduced to 40p per burger (from 75p) plus they recently had vouchers on the counter, spend £10 get £2 off.

We usually have bratwurst sausages and chicken with a marinade. Kebabs are good as you can fill out the meal with veg though like the OP this might be a bit adventurous for a first time bbqer

I would ask people to let you know what they are bringing, so you don't end up with 30 packs of burgers ;) and see what is offered. £50 is too small a budget to feed that many people without some help from the guests!

If you've never cooked on a bbq before now is not the time to start.

    Or BBQ chicken :eek::eek:

The best way of giving your guests food poisoning

OR Cheat , use cheap chicken portions , wings/legs and Marinade then pre cook in oven .Finally sling on BBQ

Cheap chicken tastes better, not dried out , safe and you look like a star :D

Thank you for tips so far!

I have BBQd before and I have cooked for large numbers before at parties but back then I didnt really think of cost :(

I have a borrow of a BBQ from a friend so thank you to those who suggested.

Have been looking out for reduced items from fresh that could be frozen (currently up to 10 chicken legs for £1 haha!) and have seen that can get some good bargins on salad at Aldi this week (39p on tomatoes, cucumber and spring onions and well as 40p Iceberg). As said before can make some marinades from things in the cupbords so tha isnt so bad. Also going to have a look what I have in the freezer as seems agaes since I looked and might come up with a few things (I know I should know be more on top of whats there :( )

The potatoe salad idea is one im looking at too.

Will let you know more how Im getting on as well as how the big day goes!

Fluffy I am also having a bbq on saturday and it will be on a tight budget. I have asked for help on the celebrations thread and have had some replies.

I am going to offer sausages and burgers and get turkery to put onto metal skewers which will be cooked and then put into a big pot for people to help them selves to (safer than having wooden skewers all over the place).

Asda smart price do cheap crisps/snacks and i will make some salads.

I will keep a tally of what i spend and we can compare!

We had some "basic" burgers from Sainsburys in the freezer and they actually cooked up very well on the BBQ. I am quite fussy with meat quality, but they were actually nice even though the meat percentage wasnt as high as I would usually eat. I think they were 79p for 8. I also think the cheaper sausages cook better on the BBQ too. Nobody has to know they are value as you could just take them out the boxes and packets.

You could also make a large punch to stretch drink further and bung fruit in it etc.

    Charcoal £5.00

    TOTAL £49.57.

Also have some food left over that can be carried over to next BBQ we having in 3 weeks or we can have as leftovers if not also learned few things as salad was not a big seller with my guests so ill cut back on that and also the dips too. I have charcoal left so we are having a BBQ again in 3 weeks but I have now decided to get people to donate to charity as people felt bad that I did all food shopping.

Was great to get together with friends and to be honest if we had all went out in the town on the lash im sure we all would have spent more even me who bought all the food! Plus it was better as you were only with people that we all liked. Great mix. Its a show that you don’t have to spent alot or do a major event to make people happy. Company is sometimes more than anything :)
