Don't tick the accept t&cs box and press enter. Then enter details. Backspace and OK leaves your details entered :)

Thanks Al Mac, will try that now ;)

I assume the above is referring to the CAPTCHA text at the bottom of the page that verifies you are a real person and not a program entering the competition.

The one used by ITV is part of a project called RECAPTCHA and it's quite clever, they have thousands of old books and manuscripts that they want to put online but as the text is old, much of it is handwritten and cannot be scanned using OCR software as it doesnt read the hand written words very well.

To do it by hand would take years so they came up with the idea of combining it with the words used to verify users. You get shown two words, one word they already know and one they dont. So long as you match the known word, you pass the verification and the second word goes into the set of newly translated ones.

I guess they probably show the same ones to several people before accepting that the entered word is correct.

This is creating a useful purpose for entering the keywords so it's important that the correct words are entered. You should therefore put a space between the words when you type them and if you cant read them, rather than guess, click the circular arrow icon on the right hand side of the box and it will pick another pair of words.

Any website can use this instead of a standard CAPTCHA so if you have your own website, have a look. It's good that ITV are using it because if there are about 400 words to a page in a book, then 13 people entering a competition 30 times would translate about a page so if 130 people entered, that would be about 10 pages of text translated for free. :T
  • That wasn't what I was having a problem with, its just every time I click 'back' the page is expired
