I was just reading about the asda money back gaurantee on the silly buys thread when i noticed that Asda offer a service where they have a braille gun and will label things for blind people either as they shop or afterwoods.
now i don't know which section to put this in really but it seems very useful.
My DH Dad is blind and would find this sort of thing a great help. :j:j:j:j:j:j:j:j:j:j:j:j:j:j:j:j:j:j

I think it's ok to leave it here;)
I was surprised to read that the service was introduced 10 years ago. It's certainly something i've never heard of and wonder if, like the refund policy, stores don't recognise it either
Will be interesting to hear if anyones experiances.0 -
Evening folks.
I work at CSD at my local ASDA and am aware of this facility. I have been employed for 5 years and have never been asked for this, just as well really coz i wouldn't have a clue where to start looking for the wee machine (i'm assuming there is a machine that does it!!) and i doubt the manager would either!
Its one thing to 'offer' a service and another to deliver!

Hi I think it is a handheld dymo gun labeller type thing. You move the dial round to match the letters to the braille letters. Otherwise you would need to know braille.
yorkshirepud if your dad would like one you can also buy them from RNIB.0 -
Thanks magic57 ohs Dad and i think he already has one. He does alot of shopping at iceland and they are really helpful there. I was just fascinated by the fact that they did this.
He has some amazing software on his phone that talks to him so he can send text messages and stuff.0 -
I also work on a CSD in Asda and our braille machine is kept handy in one of our desk drawers, never had the chance to put it to use or the machine installed on our phone set up to enable us to text talk to deaf people on the telephone.

Glad your dad is doing so well yorkshirepud.
It's great that Asda are doing this. I think all shops should offer it. I work with a blind child who I'm sure would love to experience braille in other places than just at home and school.
Those of you in CS at Asda are there notices on display and how about customer announcements to offer this service? I bet lots of blind people do not know about it.
But well done Asda anyway. :T0 -
Morning People.
I stand corrected! I was on shift for the first time last night since xmas and i opened a cupboard (one that didnt fall off. that in it self was amazing!) and lo and behold..... a braille gun! I may have to take it out its box when i'm there next and try and work it!

Hi all,
I've been making braille for the past 18 years. I specialise in regularly making braille versions of many magazines. Text versions can also be emailed to customers. Clear print and audio formats of books/documents are also available.
Our vision is of a world in which blind and partially sighted people enjoy the same rights, freedom, responsibilities and quality of life as people who are fully sighted.

Hi everyone,
I have never heard of this service either which makes me wonder how they plan to use it if no one knows about it? I have never seen it advertised that they do this when shopping at asda, has anyone else? There is so many different things they could do to help the blind instead of having these guns. For example they could use braille labels instead? These could just be stuck on products like price tags are but in a braille form so that the blind can read it as well as those who aren't blind. It would also be a great way of not singling the blind out as they would just be doing their normal shopping without having to as for help with prices as they could feel the labels to find out for themselves making them more independent.0
