Been doing my family tree for a while now. I started off with genesreunited.....you have to pay for years membership but it paid off for me in the first year as I found a relative who had a load of info so we met up and swapped details. Got me off to a good start. There are also a lot of people prepared to find out the things you're not able to.
As well as 'paying' sites there are some good free ones..........ancestryaid.co.uk is one, another is familytreeforum.com.....and rootschat......all have a lot of information on them and advice as to what programme to use to store your tree on.
Other sites to try are ancestry.com and familysearch......(I use the familysearch programme to store my details and then print off as I find stuff rather than rely on the computer.
You could also try any family history societies in the area you're looking at. They can be an invaluable source of information and well worth joining even if you don't live in the area.
Good luck.................its a fascinating hobby and very addictive.Mary

jatbaws - i foudna good site to start on is genes reunited.
Depending on where the family link is there is another page called scotalnds people - obviously for scottish roots which is very good.
Irish decendents tend to be harder to trace as there is limited information as there was a fire in the irish records office but some you can find although dont get disheartened.
I researched my mother in laws family tree and all i had was her mothers death certificate who died in 1949. I managed to trace back to the 1700 on all lines - so if you need any help please feel totally free to email me - i do have a subscription to genes reunited and credits on the soctlands people site which need using but i have no one else to research there as i have exhausted those lines.
On my own tree i am now tackling the irish line - i have an english which is pretty far back , a welsh at the same stage later 1800's each, the scottish is back in the 1600 and so now i have irish to do. Please felel free to email if you would like some help researching
x Sam xTime to find me again0 -
