    I always remember them by...

There is a place, like here, hence there
They're is a contraction of they are
Their is posessive, like I, hence their

I am an editor so I pretty much spell-check for a living, and whenever I can't think of how a word should be spelt, I break it down into the words which it seems to derive from. For example, I always forget how to spell 'receive' and 'receipt' until I think about it and realise they are both variations of 'reception' therefore the 'e' must come first. 'Know' comes from 'knowledge' so that's how I differentiate between 'know' and 'now'.

I don't think there's any foolproof way to learn to spell, and there's no hard-and-fast rules; sometimes it's just a case of thinking up silly rhymes and sayings in your head and repeating them every time you spell a word. With 'necessary' I always think "I C two S's!" With to and too, one of them has "toooo many oooo's!" With current and currant, one of them looks like an ant, and one is recent. 'Rhythm' is an acronym of rhythm has your two hips moving. It's all completely stupid, but it works.

Spelling is a labour of love really, and if you're anal like me, you take the time to remember how to spell every new word you come across.

Their - If referring to someone's possesions or referring to something personally... i.e. look at their face

There - If referring to where something is or about something, i.e. look over there

    They're - They are, i.e. They're over there

This is a handy little quiz to send people to.
  • Ok, that's that sorted. Now how about

    were, where and we're?

    :rotfl:

I can do that in one sentence!

"where are you, this is where we were yesterday, we're here now!"

(where - location "where are you", were - time "this is where we were yesterday", we're - we are (time) "we're here now"

    Or to ,two and too?
"to" - place "where are you going to?"
"two" - number "they are number two in the league"
too - multiple "I went to the zoo, are you going too?"

    :-)

Most people who studied O-Levels had fairly good spelling. GCSE's were the downfall for spelling.

But even people who can spell do get the context wrong when typing into a keyboard.

  • Also, the mix up between

    advice and advise,
    practice and practise,
    license and licence

is even more tricky but annoys me anyway when I read the wrong one!

(Usage is if it's spelt with a 'c' it's a noun (a thing) and if it's spelt with 's' it's a verb (you're doing it) -just to prevent any more headaches out there!)

I notice that some posters confuse lose and loose but that doesn't stop me reading their posts. If you haven't been taught properly it's a shame.
