1st mortgage payment - how much notice?

I've just remortgaged using Charcol. My last payment to my previous provider (A&L) was on 25 March and I then received a letter from the new provider (C&G) on 28 March (friday) that my first payment would go out on 1 April (tuesday).
Firstly, I contacted charcol and it appears that they specified the 1st of the month as my payment date. I did not specify this and was never asked about it.
Secondly, what notice do C&G have to give me for my first payment. I received 2 working days (and i was away on holiday for these!).
I've already emailed Charcol customer services complaining and registered a complaint with C&G, who said that in their small print it defaults to 1st of the month.
Surely both the broker and the mortgage provider have a duty to ask me the date - by the looks of things Charcol have specified a date (without asking me) and are primarily to blame whilst C&G are at fault for not giving me 10days notice re first DD payment.
Cheers in advance for advice.
