even if the weather is really bad it will still be nice to get away for a few days .
thanks everyone xLife should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, champagne in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming ~ WOO HOO what a ride!0 -
sorry for bumping this, but we are going up to embo for a weekend this week and really need to save pennies where i can, will take note of the things said in this thread of what to take but just wondered how much do people take for spending money? and are there any other tips on doing it cheap/os?

Hi Susie
I take it you are staying in a caravan, you can pack up most of your food from your stores at home. Using a cool bag for perishables, or find a supermarket near the site, the camp shop prices are always horrendous. Take your soft drinks and alcohol with you. Don't forget footballs, cricket set, swingball, plastic raquets and sponge ball tennis, etc. for your 3 lads. Many sites have table tennis tables, but you need your own bats/balls. (I'm just trying to remember what was in the locker of our tourer when DS was small).
My emergency meal always carried used if we landed up somewhere late, with no other meal options was a tin of stewing steak or mince, baked beans and tinned new potatoes, all heated in one pan in less than 5 mins, and served with bread to dip in the gravy, maybe not very MS, but certainly made hungry males civil again fast! Plates wiped clean and one pan = min washing up too.
Enjoy your break. DGMember #8 of the SKI-ers Club
Why is it I have less time now I am retired then when I worked?0 -
As an earlier poster said, take a sharp knife! Are you going by car? If so, I think I would even take my own non-stick frying pan. We stay in a caravan every year and their frying pans are absolute rubbish! Everything sticks in them. Trouble is that they never get to be 'seasoned' as they have to have a really good scrub when holidaymakers leave.
Also must agree with donny-gal about taking some shopping with you - take your own salt and peppers with you.
I also keep a pack of cards in my suitcase - don't take up much space and can keep a family amused for ages - let everybody choose a book as well.
Enjoy your weekend! We're off to north of Scotland on the 13th Sept for 2 weeks in a caravan and can't wait.0 -
yeah staying in a caravan up at embo, 4 hour drive for us, just thinking what all we need to take with us, been years since we have been in a caravan for a hol, 5-6 years ago if i remember right:D
dh is from up north, so will have places to go and see no doubt, he wants to go to falls of shin etc will take things to amuse the boys and start making up a list for food and stuff for boys

Depending on the ages of your boys, it's sometimes a good idea to ask them what they would like to eat - no possible room for complaints then
. Those caravan fridges are very basic under the counter jobs - hardly any freezer space. We just about manage a small bag of oven chips or a box of choc ices in the one we go to - and here's me used to two fridge/freezers plus a chest freezer lol.
At least you're only there for the weekend so not too many meals to think about.
Tins of beans/spaghetti/hotdogs are always useful.
Grilled sausages usually go down quite well - actually prefer them to hotdogs served on finger rolls with some fried onions and tomato ketchup.
If your family like the stuff, powdered mash is a good one too especially with a knob of marge/butter mixed in to give a bit more flavour - and doesn't take up as much space as bags of spuds!
I would only take one box of cereal that everybody will willingly eat - no point in overloading with opened boxes for coming home.
Some tea bags and coffee - perhaps in ziplock bags (you won't need a full box/jar for a weekend) and a couple of large bottles of milk.
Have you been to Embo/Dornoch before? Not sure where the nearest reasonable supermarket to Dornoch is - maybe Bonar Bridge/Tain/Dingwall - though there are some small shops. There's good shopping in Inverness though (couple of Tescos but one is only a Metro).
We're going to Fort William - 6 hours on National Express to Glasgow and then another 31/2 hours on Citylink. Fortunately the bus stops right behind Morrisons so that's our first job. Something to eat in the cafeteria and leave OH to look after the luggage while I whizz around the shelves picking up stuff to get us through the first few days. Then it's find a taxi for the remaining 3 miles to the caravan site. By that time it's usually around 8.30 and it's all we can manage to make the bed to fall into!0
