Cancelling direct debit for gym

Hi,
I'm just after some advice on cancelling direct debits...
I cancelled my gym membership on 25th March and was told that I needed to give 30 days notice so the gym would therefore charge me the monthly fee at the end of March to cover April. This is in the terms and conditions but I wasn't prepared to fork out £36.95 for a month's membership that I wouldn't use so I cancelled my direct debit. My question is can they actually do anything to make me pay this money? I received a letter from them yesterday telling me my dd was cancelled and I owe them, but can they do anything more than that? Even if I do have to pay shouldn't my '30 days' be taken from the day I gave notice rather than another whole month??
Thanks!

yes you will have to pay and you will probs get a debt collection letter
you have to pay a full month if you havent cancelled before the 17th of the month in which you wish to cancel (if its a virgin gym)

and if you don't pay they can put a black mark on your credit file, which can then take 6 years to clear.
if you didn't like the cancellation terms, you shouldn't have signed up.0 -
No, it's a LA fitness and my terms don't say anything about cancelling before a certain date, it just says '30 days' so could I offer them 30 days worth of payment from the cancellation date? It wasn't a matter of not liking their terms, or even not liking the gym, things got very tough this month and I needed every penny.0
