Something to do in the meantime, if you get those puppy training sheets this will save the pup weeing on your carpet or laminate as the sheets attract the pup to wee on this, you will find the pup will not go anywhere else once he knows where this sheet is. You must make sure that you keep the sheets in the same place all the time though..

This will save your floor in the meantime and my pup was house clean quite quickly with these..

Does the spray stuff work? I saw it in pets at home but was dubious about buying it. Was thinking if it did work then I could train him to go oin one part of the garden..

Not a good idea to stop the dog coming in if he/she asks..It could end up making them nervous especially for a puppy..

Sorry wasn't suggeting lock them out all lonely for ages!
its best to go out with them so you can praise them (and as the OP is using a clicker). I've found this worked well and all three got the idea very quickly :)

Nah!! those sprays i find are gimmicks..but not all dogs are the same, it may work for your dog, but it didn't mine, thats why i got the sheets. If you do get the sheets place it by the back door to the garden so he knows that is where to go for a wee..

I've recently house trained a puppy.

Never push their nose in it like people suggest. You wouldn't like it!

When the dog wees inside, scold him in a stern voice and put him outside where you want him to wee. Close the door and leave him out there for 5 minutes. Dogs don't like being separated from the pack and 5 mins is enough to let him know he's upset the pack leader (you!).

In the mean time, let him out once an hour or so, and use a word you want him to associate with going out. I say "wee wees"! When he wees outside, give him masses of praise.

It worked with my puppy! Every time I go out now or before bed, I just say "wee wees" and he goes out and does one.
Here I go again on my own....

    Thankyou all for your suggestions!

If this works, I will have saved myself a fortune! (IE: I won't have to replace the laminate floor!)

Becles, you never ever tell a dog off for weeing inside the house..you also shouldn't leave a puppy outdoors on it's own especially for that amount of time. It may have worked for you, but a dog does not have the natural instinct to know that it's not allowed to do it's business in the house.

The dog will soon cotton on to what you require it to do eventually.

When we got our pup we were on the brink of sending her back. Nothing seemed to work and she would wee and poo all over the place. We put the puppy pads down and she would go and do her mess at the side of the sheet and then tear the sheet up. We had our puppy for 6 months and then the summer months came and we had the doors open all the time, lo and behold, she just went outside and did what she had to do. Now she doesn't do anything at all in the house (except if she is excited, when she dribbles).

All I can say is be patient and it will come. I know that it isn't much help but hang on in there.

When you have a young pup you have to watch them all the time when you can. They won't be able to rip the sheet up if you are watching their every move. This is why crate training is fab, because the times when you can't watch the pup yourself for a while, you can pop him/her in the crate. As soon as you notice he/she attempts to play with the sheet you have to act quick. You wouldn't leave a baby on it's own would you, or a baby who is crawling, well you have to treat the pup in the same way. Don't tell it off and don't mop the mess up in front of it..and yes like you say, don't despair or give up because eventually you will get there..
