Tinned fruit

I buy tinned fruit (and fresh) and have noticed a big price difference between the supermarkets' basic range and branded tins. So far, I've not found any difference in the taste. Why is there such a difference in price when the quality is similar? Has anyone bought basic tinned fruit with an awful taste? Have I just been lucky so far?

I tend to buy the cheaper stuff provided its in juice rather than syrup. The only difference appears to be the size of the pieces of fruit and how broken up it is. You seem to get more bits as opposed to whole piece in the value tins - not that it matters, just saves on breaking it up to eat.

My OH hardly ever eats raw fruit but one way I can get him to eat some is tinned.. so I buy several tins of Tesco own brand per week , I don't buy the one in syrup but the other I am not sure if its just water or fruit juice anyway the taste is fine , I buy peaches pears and fruit salad and put some in small pots for him to enjoy with his lunch time sandwiches... the only difference I notice is sometimes the slices of fruit are not perfect so I guess they do use the odd pieces of fruit but it tastes no different and its a lot cheaper...

  • From experience the value peaches and broken mandarin segments are fine but I am not too keen on the fruit cocktail. That said it has been a long time since I bought branded fruit cocktail so perhaps it all tastes as bad IYSWIM

dolly day dream I too think tinned fruit has something missing in the taste but as its the only fruit OH eats I figure its better than nothing... I'd rather have fresh any day ....

Agree with the above; sometimes slightly smaller pieces and also the fruit cocktail is not nice. Otherwise no real difference. I have however had bad experiences with grapefruit on a cheaper range and so tend to get branded for that. I always buy in juice though.
