when it comes to wills it is best to pay the £100 or so and get a proper solicitor to do it. Hubby (who is one) did a brief stint in wills & probate and and now shudders at the mere mention of a cheapo whsmith type one...they often are badly written and can create problems after the death.

  • I have just been looking around for will services, so might as well share my findings with you!

Co-op legal services have will writing service for £100, goes down to £75 if you become a member for £1
    http://legalservices.co-operative.co.uk/will_writing/

Barclays have service for £80, free if you open Additions account (an account which has monthly fee, but lots of insurance freebies so might be worth looking at)
    http://www.bbtco.barclays.co.uk/wills/07_1.html

If you want the fees to go to Charity and you don't mind waiting, for £75 you could use Will Aid (next campaign is Nov '08)
    http://www.willaid.org.uk/

I can't imagine any of them would offer mickey mouse service.

Hi Rozar, first my sadness to your mum on her loss and you on your dads passing. The whole will thing is best sorted out by the experts. I know that being a worshipper at Martins feet we all look for the best advice, at the cheapest way, but, sometimes a couple of hundred pounds is the best way to protect and invest.
Please take this wee bit of advice with the best of intentions. Do not ask or let your mum make any big decisions or instructions for a wee while yet. ( I am assuming from your post Dad has only recently passed, and i would make the time span within two years at the least. ) To explain my stance: Widowed at 39, two children very young, husbands death a total shock. No will so having to cope with making decisions emotionally, financially and all other ways the good lord decides he has to throw the big test to you. Take time my sweet, one mans 10 years is another mans 10 weeks, and yet another mans 10 days. Sent with the best of intentions Grebe

If you can get the Wills done for £49, then great.

They are well known within the sector for selling up on the back of on the back of an initial low priced offer.

In particular, stay clear of the probate advice service at an extra £49 per month for 60 months - yep, thats nearly at extra £3,000. And for that, they don't do the job - they just tell your executors how to do it.....

Have a look here for willwriters in your area www.ipw.org.uk. None of them are cheap, but they are all qualified, insured and work to a Code of Practice.

I will declare an interest - I am a member of the Institute of Professional Willwriters.

A couple of years ago my wife and I put together a will with a solicitor and we got this done for free as it was done in conjunction with a scheme whereby you paid a small contribution to a Cancer Charity.

Every so often this scheme appears again so you could look out for this if you like.

    Hope this helps.

If you get a solicitor, bank (or anyone else) to do your will, do NOT allow them to name themselves as executors. Your heirs will then have no choice as to who carries out the work and will be locked into high fees.

STEP solicitors are often recommended - they specialise in wills.
