They also do a chocolate flavoured condensed milk too - beside the caramel one. I use the Dulce Leche - they do it in a squeezy bottle and a large jar now - mmmm!

  • Nestle now makes carnation caramel in tins or squeezy tubes which is cheaper than Merchant Gourmets Dulce De Leche. (My local tesco has the Nestle caramel on BOGOF at the moment). Save yourself 4 hours in front of the stove and 4 hours in A&E! :)

BTW, that Carnation pre-caramalised stuff just doesn't taste the same as doing it yourself, the consistancy is different. I guess they don't boil it as long?

i swapped to this when i discovered it a couple of years ago - cheaper than replacing saucepans ( i would not boil a tin to make caramel as i have seen one explode - i used to make with with butter and sugar but often burned the first lot and ruined the saucepan!!) the thing is no one has noticed the change!!

I always do the add to the pot variety, and after the first disaster (you cannot stop stirring for anything - even your best mate on the phone for the best gossip ever - black tar and a ruined wedding present!!!). Just melt the butter and sugar, add in the milk, stir for ever (about 15 mins) pour the caramel over the bananas and biscuit and it is delicious - plus you're kitchen won't go on fire!
