Painting wicker baskets

I bought some large wicker baskets from a car boot sale and there a little bit battered in some areas. I was wondering can you paint wicker baskets (thought it would brighten them up a bit) and if so what sort of paint do you use? Thanks

I've spray painted them with cheapo car undercoat paint from Poundland, best to spray twice to avoid blobs. Also sprayed a wicker shelf with matt black car paint from £land, one tin did about half a square yard or so.

Just had a dab at a basket with very dry Annie Sloan paint and it's great, although I was doing highlights not full colour change.
