Debt Collection Agency

Is it possible that a debt collection agency can request a copy of my credit reference history if they say they are working for a company I am in dispute with over services they claim they have provided me with. I did not have a credit agreement with in any shape or form with the original company.
I have had no notification from the original company that I should now be dealing with the DCA.
Please, if you have any ideas, i would be grateful.:o
