Saving email to transfer to 'clean' computer

Hi there
I am in the process of backing up all my data to an external hard drive so that I can wipe the computer back to factory settings (and hopefully regain some performance!).
I have found the Outlook Express folder which has all my correspondence in it and saved it to the hard drive, but is this enough? Will I be able to easily restore the inbox etc back to Outlook Express once I have reset the computer? Will I use the 'import' facility?
When I tried to open my Inbox folder on the EHD (to check that all the info has been saved) it said it couldn't open without finding a new program. I have quite a few very important emails that I don't want to lose, so I need to be totally sure I can get them all back somehow.
Thanks for any help.

are the emails not saved onto the mail server, as per hotmail etc.
other option is to email them to yourself, then dont open / download them.
could create a duplicate mail account for this0 -
