If you have a home bargains near you they sell boxes of uncooked prawn crackers for 29p. One box makes about four lots the size you get from the takeaways.
You need to get oil for deep frying very hot, then just pop a few of the uncooked crackers in at a time. They will puff up immediately, so be ready with a slotted sppon to drain them.
Make sure you only add a few crackers at a time as they do puff up quite a bit and any more than 4 seems to overload the pan. Also if you don't fish them out as soon as they puff up they begin to burn in a matter of nano seconds!
Once the oil is hot enough though it takes minutes to make a big bowlful and costs less than 10p.
If you haven't got a home bargains near you see if you can find a Chinese supermarket as they do bags of uncooked crackers really cheaply too.0 -
Its weird - my mum used to make these all the time when i was little, but now you mention it I can't remember seeing the uncooked versions in a supermarket for ages.
Google found a recipe for the uncooked crackers here http://neckredrecipes.blogspot.com/2006/04/prawn-crackers-har-pang.html
if your interested enough to make them completly from scratch.April Grocery Challenge: £250/£127.530 -
my local chinese supermarket does a box for about 40p. i cook them in batches of about 20 and can get about 6-7 batches from a box, so excellent value.0
