Sneaky ways to save the pennies

If you have a much loved jersey that is no longer wearable make it into a hot water bottle cover or a cushion.

Does anyone try and arrange their weekly shop to co-incide with the time the supermarkets start reducing the stuff on its sellby date?
I normally try to..Last week I got 4 half french sticks for 5p each and a bag of about 10 or 12 small crusty rolls for 10p. I stick 'em in the freezer and take them out and put them in the fridge the day before I need to use them. I probably have a bout 2 weeks worth of sarnies for work from that ;-)

I never see anything for pennies - it's always half price at the most, still good, but not the same kind of amazing deal...MFW #185

Good for you! I would do that but find our local Mr T doesnt reduce things that much... Things still only tend to be half what they normally are, most are over £1 and even lower priced items like raisin & lemon pancakes or potato cakes were still only down to 30 and 60p.

10-20% off at most here. Stores seem to have very varying policies on reductions. I have never seen anything for pennies round here at any time of day.....Decluttering, 20 mins / day Jan 2024 2/20 -
I ended up singing up for the milkman in the end. It sounds daft and expensive but it's saved me a world of cash.
i'm seriously considering signing up for an organic box scheme for the same reason.
right now between approved food and asda online i really only need to go instore for the odd bits and pieces other than fresh fruit and veg (and veg i mostly use frozen)
i've found a small mixed box of fruit and veg for just 10 quid a week so i'm seriously considering it. during the winter especially it would be nice as we don't have a car and it's 3/4 of a mile walk to the shop, and most of the time it will be raining here so....
it would teach my wee one to learn to eat more varied veg and eat seasonally too0 -

i always pick up money i find lying around, if it's a note i'll have a look around to see if anyone is looking for it before i pocket it though (ie i'd give it back, not trying to be sneaky!)
i'm also a dab hand at spying empty irn bru bottles from quite a distance and i'll pick those up and cash them in too. i'll even ask at a building site if there are quite a few if they mind me taking them, it's always been a yes and building sites are great to casually walk past around 7pm in the evening for that purpose
when i was in the netherlands i would take home empty 2litre bottles if i found them or wine/liquor bottles and beer bottles as you get refunds for those there. i once found an entire case left out, it'd been in the same place for a week so they obviously weren't going to return it, i got 10 cents for each bottle and a few euro's for the case/holder unit!0 -
I was in Sainsbugs yesterday and found a new and improved way of duping the consumer. When I went to buy grapes, they had two different types: one was priced per pound and one was priced per kilo. My maths isn't bad, but even I couldn't work out which one was the better value.
they should be reported for doing that, it's been at least 5 years (i believe longer actually) since they were forced by EU laws to use kilograms not pounds for weights and i agree that really IS underhanded
i once lived by a safeway that had a very nasty habit of putting up HUGE sales signs then placing the non sales items below it, i can't count how many times i chewed them up one side and down the other at customer service for doing so, each time, bold as brass they told me i should read more carefully! and each time the ACTUAL sale item was nearby but not obvious and usually quite simlar to what was not on sale but appeared to be  that was deliberate, i've no doubt about it yet they always tried to make ME look stupid!0 -

No loose ones left, so had to buy a packet.
57 - 67mm 17p each
47-57mm 16p each
No mention of weight anywhere, so which are the best value?
I gave up in the end and bought the 16p ones.
why not weigh them?
i've done it before with bags of fruit etc, my understanding is that they must not put LESS than the advertised weight in bag but they usually can't get it exact so with things like apples, carrots etc it's worth weighing bags if you think one has more than the others!
i ignore those around me at the supermarket so they might stare but i don't notice
i also take a calculator or add up on my shopping list as i go along to see my totals and use the calculator to find out best price per kg etc if it's hard to do it in my head for some reason
oh a butcher once told me that when buying turkeys/chickens etc about 1/3rd of the weight is bones (well if you're not buying boneless) so this can help you decide when boneless really IS a better deal, it's rare that it is but with some good sales you get lucky
saying that i use mine for stock but i don't mind some nice boneless stuff on occassion!0 -
a while ago I saw a pound coin on the ground but didn't pick it up in case someone had glued it down. I think if I saw one again I might give it a subtle kick as I walked along to see - oh dear, have I thought about this too much?
see what you do is nudge it lightly with your foot then step on it (just with your toe) then you pretend to tie your shoe, palm the coin and no one is the wiser0 -

HAHA that reminds of a time when i was in Iceland. There was a £1 coin on the floor in front of the woman who was in front of me, so i got my purse out of my bag and threw a few coins on the floor and tutted at myself and apologised while i scrambled about picking them all up0
