something worse......when I was a baby my mam used to rub my terry nappies on her face.(only piddles not poos)...she still says that it is the best her skin has ever been;)

We used to be advised to use the corner of the baby's wet nappy (finger in it) to wipe out the baby's mouth when they had thrush. God alone knows what the idea behind that one was about - but it seemed to work at the time (I must have been desperate to even think of trying it!). Thinking back now, thrush seems to go through their system (often being in the mouth and on the bottom simultaneously) so surely wiping the inside of the mouth with what has come out of the bladder isn't such a good idea after all  . Maybe it was just coincidence!

Isn't it something to do with uric acid in the widdle, that makes it an almost sterile liquid? I can remember a chappie some years back, who had terrible athlete's foot being told to piddle on his feet.....that was if he didn't already of course :D Imagine how much harder it would be for us female variety

  • Wow Im gonna subscribe to this thread, loads of tips! I use teabags twice (i know this sounds disgusting but its hard to tell the difference unless you like really strong tea). I also stopped buying shower gel - was buying 2 bottles a week - there is now only soap in the shower - but I get the really nice ones and they last longer and work out about one third of the price (and my bin isnt full of plastic i cant recycle). I also cook in bulk and freeze. I even won't throw away mushrooms I just slice them put them on a metal tray and freeze them - when they are frozen put them in a bag and they wont stick together and you can use them in your cooking. You should freeze fruit this way too (like berries etc) so get out there and get picking all that free bramble fruit for your crumbles - great fun for kids (avoid roadsides for pollution). Also to save on heating bills I got a weather station from a charity shop which shows the ACTUAL indoor temperature and the heating is not allowed on unless it falls below 17 degrees. My cat now has more biscuits than meat (which is better for his teeth and cheaper for me), if the telly is not being watched it is switched off and I joined consumerresearchonline.co.uk and I use samples and report back - I got a big pot of face cream which was free and was from boots - it was excellent! (and would normally be too expensive for me to buy). I now go to charity shops, and once you get used to them there are lots of bargains there, even some designer stuff I could not afford to buy!! I also found a site called freecycle.org.uk and I have given away stuff I no longer need (you cant give electrical stuff to charity shops) and have recieved stuff people no longer want so its environmentally friendly too.

Love this site and thanks for your tips, I will keep coming back to see what else I can save money on!

Thanks for the consumersearchonline.co.uk info - I have just been there to sign up ;).

Totally with you on the use of the freecycle.org site - someone recommended it to me as a place to look for logs for my wood burner and so far we have been given a lot of cherry tree logs, nicely dried out and ready for burning.

Some charity shops do take electricals though, our local Dr. Barnardo's does - but I think they have an electrician who services things before they are sold on. My washing machine went to them, it was fairly new and in good working order - just a very, very noisey model:eek: - a windfall got me an AEG which is so much quieter that I can now hear the TV in the next room again :D.

This is a great thread - despite the fact it's taken me days so far and I still haven't read every message.:T

    Hiya Mummyfrugal!

If you use soap in the shower, a good tip is to put it in one of those little net bags that you can get for putting washing tablets direct in the machine (or even one of the little ones for washing your delicate smalls in I suppose). You can hang it up in the shower and use the soap through the bag if you see what I mean - seems to make the soap last longer too.

Another thing to make soap last longer is simply to keep it for ages! If I get given nice smelly soaps I keep them in my undies drawer to help make them smell nice, and the soap hardens with age and lasts a lot longer (my granny used to do this!).

Many supermarkets now have plastic recycling bins too - worth a look when you are out shopping. We keep a separate plastic dustbin with binliner in for our plastics, then when it's full I take the binliner to the supermarket, empty it and put it back in the bin again when I get home.

Thanks for your money saving tips.

Here are some ways how I save some pennies/pounds.

    * I used to spend a smaller fortune on buying body scrubs. 6 months ago I bought a body brush and have not bought a scrub since.
    * Instead of buying a daily cappucino, I now buy 10 individual fresh ground coffee filters for around £2 and drink them at work.
    * Old sun lotions I use as a hand cream.
    * I cut in half all cream and toothpaste tubes.
No toiletries challenge, started 18/1/2010 - Putting £1 in my savings jar for every item that I use up. Pot 1 to 4 = £261. Pot 5=£23
    Boots points:£39.21. Extra money in 2012:£674.59. In 2013 £603.48. 2014: £85. 2015: £0 :j

Cheaper again (and less plastic waste) is one of these http://www.hrhiggins.co.uk/accessories/coffee/plastic_filter_cones you then buy a pack of small paper filters (I think I pay about a pound for 100) and a bag of ground coffee, there is much less faffing around than a coffee plunger as the coffee is all in the filter paper and you can just bin it plus you get to try different coffees.

You just use yours twice! I use one a day and there's 2 of us:eek: (This may be WAY too much saving for some folk, I know!)
I've not read all the thread so apologise if I've repeated something, but I add grated carrot to my mince in a shepherds pie to make it go further/or reduce the meat and no one seems to notice. This one may make me sound really mean, but I pick up those little bags of sweetners/sugar from cafe's for my friends when they call for a cuppa (they get a NEW teabag:p) as we don't use sugar.

Thanks for all the tips on here, its made me really think about what I can save and I am trying not to use as much power now, last night I filled 2 hot water bottles with the hot water from the pasta we had for our tea and so we didnt need any heat we just cuddled up to the bottles.

I always stick a couple of jacket potatoes in foil in the oven when I am cooking something else - then the next day I warm them in the microwave for DDs who love them with cheese. Usually I peel most of the skin off (they will eat some of the skin but not if there is loads in there) and then I chuck the cooked peelings away  OMG how many meals have I wasted doing this?

So, yesterday I decided that the (fairly thick) peelings would be fab tossed in oil or Frylight and baked in the oven til crispy. There wasn't enough so I am going to collect them in the freezer til I have lots then do them with either chilli or melted cheese :D

It will look like a real treat but will be very moneysaving :j
