Days off not together

My relation works for a supermarket and never gets his two days off together. He is not bothered about weekends off. Is their any legislation which could be used to ensure he can get two days together from time to time?
Thanks,
Fortyfoot

Has he asked his employer for 2 days off together?

Nothing in employment legislation-it all depends what his contract says-but most contracts with flexible days specify number of hours/days worked in a week. I can't imagine any supermarket putting a two days clause in an employment contract. Personally I like having my two days off split up (although mine are the same every week)-and if I need two days together I just add on one day's leave to a day off and end up saving holiday anyway.
If two days off together are so essential then perhaps he or she should be looking for another job. We work to live not live to work after all :)

If it's only an occasional thing he wants then I'd just stick in the odd request (I'm assuming from what you have said he has different shifts each weeks with various days off)

My days off this week are today and Tuesday, it doesn't bother me not having the days off together though it is nice occasionally
  • My son works in Matalan. If he wants two days off together he will ask his manager and normally they will oblige.

I think it's part of being in retail that you don't get two days off together,

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton

Agreed, I worked in retail for over twenty years. You know that Saturday's, and now often Sunday's, are part of the working week when you take the job.

In some ways I prefered having a day off in the week. It usually meant I worked two days, had a day off, worked another three and had a day off and so on
It's taken me years of experience to get this cynical

Exactly-my days off are Monday and Friday-suits me down to the ground splitting up the week.
