i can not afford any of the books or joining fees with classes. have found some useful info on there site but obviously unless you join you dont get access to the nitty gritty of it. i have been on here before and was told by some kind mse lady that i needed to work on a 24 point bonus. but would love some more info if any can be spared via e-mail or post if books not used anymore. anything really. not even sure at moment how much i need to lose but i fear it has to be in the 5 stone categry, hope someone can help.. ooh just thought scanning some important pages to me would be great, anyway heres hoping

  • We had a copy of the WW sheets and lost loads of weight between us without evert joining - I'll put some info below, but this is from memory, so it may not be 100%. Shouldn't be too far off, though.

Basically, if you're female between 10 and 12 stones, you are allowed 20 points per day, 12-14 stone is 22pts, 14-16 is 24 etc. For men it's more - 14-16 stone is 30pts, 16-18 32 etc. You can accrue points and save them for up to a week, but only 4 points per day - so if you are allowed 20 points per day, and from Monday to Friday you only eat 16 points worth, on Saturday you can have 40 points, which is enough for a Curry :) Don't be tempted to just cut down on points, though - if you need 20 points per day but only eat 12, your body's metabolism slows down because you aren't getting enough food, so you end up not losing weight. You can also earn extra points by exercising - e.g. 30 minutes on a exercise bike is (I think) 4 points, a 30 minute walk is 3, half an hour's gardening is 3 etc. (these are rough figures - I can't remember exactly, but maybe someone will post on here).

Right, how to work out points (this is the bit that WW tries to keep to themselves, so I hope I'm not breaking any trade secrets!) - it's all based on calories and saturated fat. Every 70 calories you eat is counted as 1 point. In addition, every 4g of saturated fat is counted as an extra point (in effect, loading foods which have relatively low calories but high sat fat). So, if a ready meal is 280 calories a 2g saturated fat, it's 4 points for the calories and an extra half for the fat. WW only round points to the nearest half, but we used to do it to the nearest quarter. As long as you're consistent, it will all balance out.

If you can stretch to it, get on the WW site and get the points book - it's only about £5, but it lists points values for loads of foods (including individual supermarket brands). It doesn't tell you how to work out points, or how many points you can have per day, but I've given you that information above.

I've listed a few basic points values to give you an idea (again, all from memory):

Baked potato (225g) - 2.5 points (with a blob of low fat spread, 3pts)
    Slice of bread - 1pt
Grilled chicken breast - 2.5 points
    1/2pt skimmed milk - 1 point
1/2 pt full fat milk - 4 points
    Vegetables - mostly 0 points

Hope this helps - if you want any more info, just ask!

    My first post...hope it helps.

I found the following website very good...

    h**p://www.onmyweigh.com

There is a tools page, which has a WW style excel spreadsheet which helps you work out points.

This area of the weightwatchers website has many pointed up recipes for you to cook.

You can be a member of the website without being a ww member, the eSource part of it is for using if you are attending meetings and you have to pay a monthly subscription to have access to that. I did that option myself for a while, whilst it was on trial.

I would recommend this site as it gives you great moral support and I found the success stories quite useful. There is also a forum on the site, where it is quite common for the members to set goals and keep track with them. So, if you are finding it difficult to stick with it, just log on and whilst you are typing, you don't eat!

I used a combination of Atkins and WW to lose 6 stone, but occasionally head back to the WW site for inspiration and ideas.
  • try your GP. Mine has a dietician in once a month and previous GPs used to run their own fortnightly weight loss clinic presided over by practise nurse. My current practise nurse has loads of booklets on losing weight and several diet plans that she is happy to press on the less twiggy like of her patients. It's free.
if i had known then what i know now
