    Grated carrot was the traditional farmer's wife's method of making the meat go further in cottage/shepherd's pies without anyone knowing and so avoid any gossip or worse. I deliberately included a little bit grated carrot in my cottage/shepherd's pie recipe to keep it traditional.

    Every day's a school day, I didn't know that's where it originated from Stephen, thanks :D .

    If parsnips are in season (and cheap!), they're nice mashed with the potato topping on a shepherds pie too.

    I'm not that good at making meals from store cupboard stuff but there are certain things I always have in stock.

    2-4 tins of chopped toms
    1 bag pasta

    1 box risotto rice

    2 jars of pasta sauce
    1 box of cereal
    1-2 jars curry sauce

    tom puree
    gravy

    pepper
    vinegar

    Fridge
    cheese
    milk
    butter
    eggs

    Freezer
    salmon
    chicken breast
    mince
