Cake icing help!

I have decided to make my daughters birthday cake this year, she's only 2 so it won't matter if it goes wrong slightly.

She is completely Iggle Piggle obsessed so decided on Piggle. He looks kind of easy, one shade of blue and red.

Now the icing, this is where I get stuck. What type of icing would I use that is easy to use, was thinking of buttercream icing? But can I colour it?

If you can, get hold of some paste food colouring rather than the liquid - it's much better for buttercream as you can get a good strong colour without adding too much extra liquid. Also, if you're worried about additives etc you can get low additive/tartrazine free paste colours, but you'll probably have to get those online as they're not generally stocked by shops.

Are you wanting to ice a 'picture' of iggle onto the cake? Or make a 3D shape of him? if its the 3D option you'll need to use fondant.

Absolutely use the gel or paste colourings, you can get them in hobbycraft now, hurrah! :D

Thanks for this, it might work out cheaper than my cake shop!

Could she not use the star tip icing for a 3d model?

Oh to cover it you mean? I meant if she wanted to mould a shape, like yours on your cake, I'd presumed you'd made them from fondant?

You inspired me to have a go lol look at my cheesy smurf, they annoyed me so much, you must have so much patience :Dpicture269yl5.jpg

Sorry to hijack, but Good Fairy, where did you find those cake cases? I've been looking for some like that for aaaggeess (I spend far too long ogling the Cupcake Bakeshop blog lol and they're what she uses) and I'd love to get some. Can't seem to find them anywhere though.
