Work have overpaid me

Yes... another one of those threads!

Received a letter from work this afternoon saying that they had overpaid me in Feb and have overpaid me again this month but was too late to make amendments as it had already been processed. They are saying that they will have overpaid me by over £1k.

My hours decreased mid Feb and this is possibly why I didn't notice the overpayment for that month.

The issue is the letter says they recover £250 pcm until the debt is repaid. I don't have issue paying them back the money but £250 is exactly one third of what I earn! I am going to write back to the finance department and highlight this fact and offer to make smaller payments to pay back the debt. I just need a bit of advice as to how much to offer... any ideas? I am hopefully going to apply for another job within the same organization, thus doubling my hours and my income should I get the job.

I would just like to stress, that I will pay this debt back and am not trying to shirk the fact that I owe work this money

Thanks

    Hi,

I have been in a similar situation, I worked for a large finance company and they overpaid me a similar amount, I just explained to them that I was in hard times (which I was) and that they could get min 10% back each month and more if i could afford it. If they are not so helpful as was in my situation then I would advise going to Citizens Advice for some help. Hope it all works out.

To be honest, I think they are trying it on to ask for 1/3 of what I earn and are expecting me to challenge and offer a smaller amount. Will speak to a colleague and see what they advise

  • Hi

You should have no problems paying back just 10% a month as it wasn't your mistake, so you shouldn't be punished.

  • Hello,

The same happened to me a while ago, whilst working for a big company. I told them I wasn't in a position to pay it all back in one go or big chunks, so agreed to pay it back at around 10% per month, as this was more suitable for me.

At the end of the day, it's their mistake and not yours, so they should listen to you hopefully and see your point of view.

What about the tax you paid on the amount? Won't you be out of pocket if you pay them 100%?

    I don't know - will I?

They are saying it's £1012.33 gross

Have spoken to my dad (the font of all knowledge) and he suggests that I pay back £543.39 as soon as, which is the overpayment for this month, which seems like a good solution as I won't have actually spent it and then try to negotiate the remaining £468.94. Would it be reasonable to offer £78 for the next 6 months?

You should've paid more than £12.33 tax & NI on £1k.

If you want you can send me your Jan, Feb & Mar payslip details (tax code, pay to date & tax to date) and what you should've been paid for Feb & Mar & I'll see if I can work it out for you.

    Good luck!

PS You don't have to send me any sensitive info for me to do the workings (ie Nat Ins number, name etc). I can do it with just the figures :)

Do you think you can do that if I was on emergency tax for one month and then repaid it in Feb?

Why is nothing straight forward?! :D

Thanks for the offer - I don't have March's payslip yet, will collect when i'm at work tomorrow. Just have this awful letter from a 'finance officer' from Head Office who seems to have difficulty typing a basic letter!!! Will pm you tomorrow if the offer still stands!

No problem, will do it over the weekend when the little ones are out & about with Dad or sleeping :)

Please don't have a sleepless night about it, after all it was their mistake!
