If your house is registered electronically with the Land Registry then these documents are of no practical use but of purely historic value. You can check on the Land Registry web site for this. The majority of houses are registered.

There are odd occasions where a house is not registered (been in the same ownership for donkeys etc) in which case the deeds MAY be important. The best thing to do if this is the case is get a solicitor to sort it out. Regards.
  • Hi, When I paid off my mortgage, I was charged £50 by the Halifax Bldg Society to have my house deeds sent to me. I was told that if I didn't pay the £50 then they would be destroyed - so I paid up reluctantly but how come it took £50 to retrieve and post them?

I thought that what people did when they were near to paying off their mortgage, was to leave a very small outstanding balance on there, say £50 owing, so that their mortgage was still 'live' and hence the bank would retain the deeds free of charge.
