EDF Says I'm Being Scammed

Options
I've been with Scottish Power for a while, but after the MSE newsletter said it was time to switch, I used the suggested price comparison website and it advised me that Eon was one of the cheapest for my area and usage.

I'm in the process of switching.

Yesterday I got a cold-caller at my door promoting EDF. He reckoned the figures he had showed Scottish Power as being LOWER then Eon! I explained that I'd used a comparison website and he said these websites were being less than honest in the way they promoted providers - giving priority to those with the best commission.

Of course he then went on to tell me that EDF was the cheapest out there.

I'm mainly concerned that I might have just switched to a more expensive supplier.

Does anyone know if there's any truth to these claims and how I can find out if Eon is in fact more expensive than Scottish Power?

  • The surest way of comparing is to check the actual tariff prices.

If you used a comparison site such as uswitch.com, then, while they do receive commission from the energy suppliers, they are still obligated to provide impartial comparison results for your particular profile; otherwise they would be breaking the law.

If you enter annual consumption in kWH - as opposed to what you pay by direct debit - the comparison website give fairly reliable results. However ensure they haven't missed any companies/tariffs.

I'm not 100% sure but i think the majority of door step sellers only have the standard tariff rates of other suppliers to hand. Therefore, scottish power standard may well be cheaper than E.ON standard, but other tariffs will be cheaper.

Like silverbullit said, check the unit prices for what you're paying now against E.ON's.
