Council tax advice

Options
I have been having trouble paying my council tax. I was in a job that gave me 9 hours only a week. I paid what I could. When the new tax book came out last year they combined what was left witht he new one. Once again I struggled. When I got a new job with more hours I paid what they was asking for every month with a little bit extra to try and help with arrears.

Now I have lost my job I am worried about what will happen.

Any advice please?

  • really, if you are struggling that much, you should be getting benefits of some kind. Go to www.entitledto.com and fill in your circumstances and the calculator will tell you what benefits to apply for. If you a re single and have no children you are expected to be able to live on next to nothing but if your income is low enough you would still get some help with rent and/or council tax. I've jsut helped a friend claim £30 a week housing benefit on an income of about £150 a week for instance. It will make the difference for him.

Now that you no longer have a job, get onto Income support. You will get all your council tax paid (though no arrears I suspect)

    Good luck and regards

  • when you fill in your claim form make sure you get a receipt to say they have received it as they do lose them and they will only go from when you put another form in if you have no receipt. best to go into office.

Its extremely unlikely to have been written off - its one thing they don't like doing. In my dept (280K + people) we wrote off £5K last year,

I would contact them and ask what's happening.

It may that benefit has covered this year and what you managed to pay has cleared the arrears but its always worth checking.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.
