I can remember in the early 80's going to the local shop with a note from my mum for cigarettes and they didnt bat an eyelid, handed them over and off you went lol. I was under 10 at the time.
Late 70's the highlight of my week was when the chip van came round, it was a small black van and they used to cook the chips elsewhere and load them in to warmers. And the good old days when you got your chippy tea in newspaper0 -
I remember as a child going to the local Coop it was a grocers and haberdashery shop. There were very big dark wood counters and you could order larger items like a suit and pay weekly but not collect untill it was all paid for. Customers also had to remember their coop number to get any divi as there were no such things as club cards.
Those were the days LOLGrocery Challenge for April £250:) spent £ 96
One day my ship will come in.......but with my luck I'll be waiting at the airport:p0 -
You have reminded me of 'my job' when I was a teenager. I went to a grammar school in a small town the other side of the larger town from the village where we lived. Mum had found a grocers which was cheaper then local shops in the large town .
On Thursdays, after school I called in the grocers and left the weeks shopping list and a couple of bags (plastic bags were unknown!)
On Friday I called after school to collect the bags and pay the bill. I am not sure how Mum knew how much to give me but she didn't have the money for price rises!
I did the bus journey with 2 bags of shopping and a weekend's homework.0
