Hi All,
need to buy a new desk and was looking at Argos
The only requirements is that it is free standing, and also that it doesnt have a slidy thing on it - I hate those...seen a few of the cheap ones... does any one have a recommendation or know of any sales which will be on soon?
I will be using it for uni work

Make one out of an old pallet band bricks. If my experience of Argos furniture is anything to go by then it will be better made, cheaper and last a lot longer.
The last item I got from them was a pc desk that was reduced from @ £50 to £8, it was to do for only a month over Xmas until I could make one to my own design.
I thought £8 was worth the risk, it wasn't. The panels were very badly finished and the whole thing needed extra reinforcement. I even contemplated taking it back when I opened the package.0 -
ah right, thanks for that! I might go ahead and make my own!:A Carpe diem :A

i just got this one from ikea, not especially cheap but it is a solid built thing even though it is still fibreboard and veneer.

It will be a lot easier to assemble too.papalazarou wrote: »i just got this one from ikea, not especially cheap but it is a solid built thing even though it is still fibreboard and veneer.

If that is too expensive you can buy screw on legs from Ikea or b&q and screw them to an mdf top. Glue two pieces together to make it thicker for a more solid desk.0 -

only trouble is with ikea desks, they are strong but ive had mine about 6 months now and the edge of the desk where you sit is getting worn away, the mdf can be seen now instead of the beech colour.0 -
I've got this one here and had it quite a while now, it was easy to put together and I've not had any problems with it.....it even moved house last year with us and survived when OH's more expensive one didn't!lolJust become FTBs & Aiming to be mortgage free by 2034

Another poster, another opinion ... I too got that one, and think it is very poor (though I am happily using it in my room now).
But I had to reinforce it to stop it wobbling / trapezoiding (it preferred being at 5 degress to the vertical), and I think the laminate on the front edge of the desk will come off soon - even after 2 days of use, I could feel it flexing away, catching my arms as I typed.
So, in m opinion - it's cheap, but pretty poor quality.0 -

Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere (please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies.
