I need a better paid second job!

Ideas sought, please, for a better paid second job! I work full time so need a job that is evenings, really starting after 6.30pm too. I don't mind working late and am not afraid of hard work but equally I have good IT skills and don't mind working at a computer for more hours.

I work in a pub at the moment but it's minimum wage only and no chance of a pay rise. I do like working there but need to earn more than £5.52 per hour (it's taxed too, take home will be £4.42ph when the tax rate changes). I'm looking for a better paid bar job but could do with suggestions for anything else I could look for. I was thinking caring and cleaning for a start but don't know what hours they're likely to be for?

Any suggestions? Apart from looking in the local paper, where else am I likely to find adverts for work? The jobs I've got in the past have all been advertised in the paper so I'm a bit stuck for where else to look.

Thanks!

Have you tried any of the other pubs in your area, they might pay more, how about a restaurant

Thanks, nothing being advertised locally but I did wonder if it's worth going round to a few of them to ask anyway? I was promised a job at one pub which would have been much better pay but every time I go to see the owner he just says that he's still working out the rota. I might have to resort to trying restaurants - I'd have to look fairly smart for those though! But tips might help to increase the wages too - we don't get tips at the pub I work in.

what about residential care home for special needs these are 24 hour settings so would need cover across evenings weekends etc.

im sure they pay is more than minimum wage and it is something im looking into personally. i am expecting the pay to be between £8 and £10 per hour. i hope. perhaps someone who works in this type of job can enlighten us.

I hadn't thought about care homes - I'd been thinking about being a mobile carer but looking at care homes too would give me a wider range of places to look.

To be honest, I don't think care work would be any better paid than the bar work (they tend to be basic rate as well,) and it's likely to be much harder work (physically and psychologically.)

It may offer more hours though (night shifts e.g.)

Consider only if you think you'd enjoy it a lot more than the bar work.

Cleaning in supermarkets! The shifts where I work are 2 and 1/2 hours in mornings start at 5 and 3 hours in length in evenings. I'm a student and its not just the hours that suit its also the felxibility of management as to missing days swapping days etc. It's a bit degrading and low profile but if you need the money...

the care work that im looking at is advertised at £8 + per hour personally i think im worth that much (at least) and prefer not to work for less.

im not talking about old peoples homes - yes they are minimum wage and tht is scandelous im talking about challenging behaviour unit/respite for special needs etc. its very very rewarding and great fun really xx

personally i cant think of anything worse than working in a bar xx

    horses for courses i suppose
  • My friend cleans in a hospital at the weekends it is very good money as you are working 'out of hours'

Tried and tested by two student daughters
    a) Catering agency work-pays more thasn minimum wage usually but ensure you get paid for travel plus time for the travelling (or at least a contribution)
b)If you have good IT skills try offering CV design/thesis typing-advertise in Students Unions/local shops
    c) Youngest daughter has just done a one day Bar Licence course-local college runs a day's course every month.it costs but it gives you a licence that (according to youngest daughter) nearly doubles your pay and gives you more job opportunities

Oh, I can - shelf filling (did that for a couple of years), kitchen porter (managed to stick that for a year!), cleaning - for individuals rather than a company such as a supermarket (I'm useless at it :))..... But bar work isn't the best way to earn money, I agree.

I hadn't thought about offering typing etc - my IT skills are more along user support but I can type well too. It's also something I could do at home which would be a lot better than having to travel to the pub. I live out in the country so have a longish drive to get to work - no local pubs are taking staff on at the moment.

    Thanks :)
