Anyone know of anyone else 'compacting'?

Hi
I'm a new poster - have read for yonks but finally got round to posting.
I'm doing a self-imposed challenge - not to buy anything new for one year - started 6th Feb - for financial and environmental reasons I'm sure you'll all understand lol...

It occurred to me there may already be a thread/forum devoted to similar on here - can anyone tell me if there ie?

Many thanks

I suspect probably the declutter thread here or the simplifying life thread here might be of interest.

i'm fascinated - as a charity shop/freecycle queen it sounds wonderful. I'm assuming food doesn't count??!! I'd love to know what less obvious things you can get second hand and what you can't - I'm assuming petrol (if you drive), food - what else?

I'm a confirmed charity/second hand shop addict and thats how we tend to live.........furniture, clothes, saucepans, crockery etc. (except undies and possibly shoes -don't have many pairs of them.......shoes that is.........lol)
This year everyone is having 'recycled' stuff for birthdays and christmas - unwanted gifts handed into the charity shops become much wanted stuff for my gift baskets. Also make my own greetings cards.........spend as little as possible for economic reasons so try and utilise whatevers around the house where I can.
Not sure what else I can do in this area so I'll be interested to see what :j other ideas people have.

    :hello: Hi Mrs Tight

I wish you all the best with your "compacting" - a la San Francisco Compacting Group. I certainly think its a worthy endeavour - which I have been following with a degree of interest - though felt not quite in a position to take part myself (mainly down to still doing work on my old dump of a house).

Hope it goes well - and I will be interested if you keep us informed how its going.

  • Not sure I could never say never, but since change of circumstances, I am a lot more careful with money. I have picked up lots of tips from here. I would say even though on the whole, even though I have made this lifestyle choice, (after years of working, shifts and nights with 4 kids in stressful job), my life is richer because you can't put a price on the love of family and good friends. Good luck. Don't beat yourself up if you don't manage it.:o

Good luck and keep us posted about how it's going. I have also read up on compacting on the internet - I think there is a Europe forum isn't there? Great idea - both for your own pocket and for the world's resources. It will also help you to practise skills such as finding something you already own as an alternative for the 'thing' you can't buy - of course I can't think of an example right now. Must need a cup of tea and slice of cake......
