HELP! Locksmith or mechanic?

My car key has jammed in the lock and the spare is in the glove compartment jammed in the old petrol cap
I don't know what to do  I'll be the first to admit I need a man at times like this! Should I call a mechanic or a locksmith?

What car is it and how old is it?
Some makes are very easy to get into, I used to have a Ford that I could open with half a tennis ball, and a vauxhall, that would open with any Yale key. And others that could be opened with a wire coat hanger.0 -
It's a 1992 Ford Escort. It's got central locking and I'm now panicking in case it's 'gone' cos I expect that'll cost a fortune. Some people see the glass half full, others see the glass half empty - the enlightened are simply grateful to have a glass

My key jammed in the petrol cap of my escort van, I think its a common problem. I did eventually get it out by dribbling 3 in 1 oil into the lock and fiddling with it. I got it out just as the AA man turned up!

I think your ford is too new for the tennis ball trick, but the central locking shouldnt be damaged.
Options:
Try a bit of oil, and if you can get hold of the end of the key with pliers, wiggle until it comes free.
Flag down any passing Coppers and hope they are in a good mood, flirt like mad that usually helps.
Or bite the bullet and ring the Ford Main dealer and ask how much for a new key and extraction of the old, Flirting may help with the price on this as well.
Do you have any friends who have breakdown cover tied to them rather than a car.0 -
Squirt in lots of WD40 or something similar, wiggle lots. Squirt in more WD40 and leave for 5 minutes. Wigggle lots more. Should come out a doddle. Unless you forced it in in the first place you've just got a bit of dirt wedged in with the key.Saving for a Spinning Wheel and other random splurges : £183.500
