The FSA (Financial Services Authority) have a website where you can find out information regarding many things including mortgages.

  • if you're buying a house you also need to consider furniture, legal costs, costs of removal, mortgage protection insurance - what if either or both of you lose job?
your employer- some building societies claim to offer better rates for those employed usually in large scale organisations- public/private sector- obviously check deal best suited to your needs.
how you manage money- are you always overdrawn?

  • Why Edinburgh?. I presume you work there but if you are in touch with ESPC you will see that you get more for your money looking outside especially as Edinburgh is expensive. why not try West Lothian/East Lothian. For example the structure plan for edinburgh and lothians is more affordable houses. Tranent for one is building massively and has about 4 railway stations locally, i.e. wallyford, prestonpans, longniddry etc. Musselburgh is also very local and they are going to have more buses and put on more trains as the University is moving there.

They'd love you if you did, Rob :)

Depends what you want. Fixed or variable? 100%? How long do you want any intro deal to last? How much in fees are you able to pay?

Best you read Martin's mortgage articles then when you decide what features you want try putting your details through the moneysupermarket & moneyfacts sites or contacting one or more of the brokers - all linked to MSE site.

If your brain hurts with the number of options available - don't worry it's par for the course  ... alternatively, you could just walk into a bank .... :rotfl:

P.S. The link in your 2nd post was there be4 I posted this. They're "best buys" for fixed rates with extended tie-ins. ET's are not good unless you can't afford the others in the first few years, they start very low but tie you in when the low rates finished and smack your botty good style for needing a low start -IMHO  . Try BB's w/out ext ties ins.
