in Cutting tax
Hi all. I need a bit of advice.
I've been working for a company for around six months and was originally on a 8 hour contract. Although I did do extra hours some weeks, especially over Christmas, it wasn't enough for me to have to pay tax. Recently though I've been offered a better contract of 22 hours a week, which I think means I should now be paying some tax on my earnings, however my tax code hasn't changed on my pay slips and I'm still not paying any. Is this something I should be informing the tax office of? I assumed the pay roll department at work would sort it out but it doesn't look like they have and I'm worried I might suddenly get a big tax bill in a few months time. Can anyone advise if I should be sorting it out or if I should be nudging my employer to do it?

Are you still with the same firm?
What is your tax code? If it's 522L that's the standard tax code for everybody with the normal personal allowance of £5225 this tax year. Your tax code does not change because you are working more or less - your tax does.
If you are not paying any tax yet it's because you have not earned enough this tax year and the tax year is about to end. That situation may change with the new tax year starting in April but your code will automatically pay the correct tax.0 -

Your tax code wont change just because you are working more hours.
It is probably because you havent earnt enough over the tax year and are on a cumulative code.
Tax will more than likely kick in after 6th April:heartpuls baby no3 due 16th November :heartpulsTEAM YELLOWDFD 16/6/10"Shut your gob! Or I'll come round your houses and stamp on all your toys" The ONE, the ONLY, the LEGENDARY Gene Hunt :heart2:0 -
Ah right ok. It is 522L I just had a check, so it must just be that I haven't earned enough to pay any tax, hurray! Thanks all for putting my mind at rest, now I just need to see about getting an allowance for washing my uniform. Aren't the forums brilliant!0
