McDonald's - Buy One, Get One Free

I know this thread had gone further off topic than an eskimo in the desert. But let's not forget that McDonalds in the USA openly and regularly donated money to Noraid.
For those who dont know what Noraid is - look it up on Google and see that the Americans have very selective memories when it comes to condemning terrorism. As I understand it (I may be wrong - I was once before in 1986) there are many families of British troops lost in the troubles in Ulster that still boycott McDonalds for this reason. Plus they do treat their staff like dirt, mind you there are a few that deserve it. Someone previously reffered to "Johnny-no stars" - now I like that !Light blue touchpaper and stand well back !0 -
Many MSE-ers would appear to be likely to eat raw sewage if it was announced that for a limited period it was BOGOF.0

If ever you get a dodgy meal, then complain! Too many people stay quiet when the food is not right. Mac donalds aren't too clever about watching how long the burgers have been in the chutes and I reckon about quarter of the time I eat there the food is cold and congealed.
The managers are quick to give refunds or replace meals, and they often give out a meal voucher for your next visit.
If you get any problems, just mention that you'll take it up with their head office.
Anyone finding a foreign body should take it to the local council's Environmental Health Office, preferably via the local newspaper. I never found anything at Mac D's, but have had problems at Burger Kings.0 -
Sybarite wrote:Going even further off-topic (apologys) is it also my only little paranoia or are TV ads in general much louder than the programmes? I always seem to be reaching for the mute button these days and I'm sure I never used to.
In the UK on terrestially broadcast television at least it is illegal for adverts to be louder than programmes.
However the measurement of volume used is very simple and advertisers use all sorts of techniques to make that adverts appear louder without actually being louder examples include:
Compression - if the regulations state a maximum volume, you compress the amplitude so that the loud bits a bit quieter, then turn the overall volume up so that the louder bits reach the maximum. Generally speaking the net result is that everything gets louder but the loudest bits which stay the same.
Playing with the equaliser - by boosting the treble you can make the sound much sharper / brighter / punchier and just adjust the other frequencies to keep within the regs.
Using all the channels. If you have surround sound, adverts often blast out of all the speakers, whilst films etc. will just use the rears for fill.
Unfortunately most planned advert breaks occur at a natural break point where there isn't much action / dialogue actively happening, so you get a full volume advert just after a quiet programme bit.
Luckily many modern televisions have an "auto volume levelling" function which detect sudden changes in the volume and "turn it down" for you. I find adverts much less painfull with this enabled on my tv.
Cinemas (because you can't turn the volume down) use a much more complex measurement technique for adverts ensuring that they appear to sound the same volume as the film. Personally I always find cinemas too loud, and long to take in a pair of ear muffs.

Thanks for this - I use the auto-sound levelling function thingy on by portable Sony TV , but it doesn't seem to make any difference. I still reach for the mute button.
The jiggery-pokery with the sounds levels only really annoys me, as result I turn the sound off, which presumably is a counter-productive for the advertisers's agenda.I do hope you're telling the truth?0 -
ozvaldinho wrote:I never saw a veggie option at macdonalds either. BTW, while discussing vegetarianism, is oral okay as long as you don't swallow?
I can't believe everyone else ignored this. I would imagine vegans might have a problem with this, but vegetarians do consume animal products.....
...oh dear, it might have been better to leave it. Mind you, I don't know which I find more distasteful: this subject, or a cold congealed big-mac.
I have a good method to assess the food you eat. Let it go cold - if the fat solidifies and it looks nasty, cut it out of your diet. How nasty is cold saturated fat?0 -
I fully respect vegetarians who are honest about why they don't eat meat, whether the reasons are religious or just down to other personal preference.
What annoys me are veggies who get on a soapbox about how we 'shouldn't' eat meat and we're not supposed to etc.
My argument is:
(i) is it wrong, then, for other animals to eat meat?
(ii) what are our canine teeth for if not eating meat?
Sorry but I just happen to know a few self-rightous veggies who give all the good ones a bad name.
Oh, and as regards this offer - if you don't like it, how about moving on?
Edit: not sure where the swallowing thing comes into it though. ;-)0 -
can we please keep on topic, guys, as Grabbit isn't the place for discussions on this. Thanks
