Best of both worlds. Quality and convenience.
I agree, a nice bit of kit, but still not comparable with top end traditional audio gear, like Linn or Cambridge Audio :cool:0 -

But I have to disagree. The Slim Devices Transporter holds its own against Linn CD players such as the Majik (in the opinion of many users) and the Squeezebox will give as good as it gets against any Cambridge Audio CD player.
What makes you think they aren't comparable? Have you done comparative listening tests? There's love in this world for everyone. Every rascal and son of a gun.
It's for the many and not the few. Be sure it's out there looking for you.

To be fair I've not heard the Transporter, just teasing, hence the smiley... I'm sure it's a great bit of kit.
But I've heard my fair share of Linn, CB Audio, Meridian and all sorts in listening rooms. Different people like different tonality, while some swear by ones set-up, others prefer the sound of a different set of components. I've found, in the past, that the actual cost of components sometimes doesn't come into it, some very good "budget" items can sound just as good as ones costing ten times as much - it's a personal preference. Some people still like the warmth of a valve amp, others the clinical note of a digital. Etc. Etc.
Yahama are making some interesting "digital" music stuff too.0 -
I still buy CDs and rip them into iTunes using AAC. I'm lucky that my hearing is dreadful so I can listen to an MP3 at 64kb/s and barely flinch!0

great to see this thread still going
i can see the advantages of digital music but i think i will experiment a bit more before commiting to one or the other. i dont feel i've ever had a good enough setup to get the best sound from my music.
currently i am playing music from the pc either from a cd or ripped/downloaded mp3 through logitech x-210 speakers. they sound reasonably good but i dont think they compare to the sound of some floor standing speakers a mate has, jamo i think.
i'd like to buy a cd player and decent speakers for the lounge.. or possibly use a dvd player, as somebody suggested so i can also watch dvd's too.0
