in Cutting tax
Can anybody advise and help me to work out how this will pan out
My son has a tax code of 522L, he has two jobs
Job 1 was allocated the tax code of 522L and a P45 was handed to them after my son did a 12 week holiday contract in the summer so the earnings from this are included in job 1's total pay
Job 2 has code BR applied so he is paying tax per month, completed a P46 and sent to tax office.
He phoned to remind them a couple of weeks ago that this BR code was still being applied and they split his code between the two jobs
Job 1 paid yesterday and because his Total pay is £ 3749 against a split code of 240L he paid most of his monthly wage in tax !!
Job 2 is due to pay end of month, his total pay to date end of Feb is £726 and he has paid £159 in tax against his BR code ........ his split code for this job should be in effect on his March pay and is 282T
282 + 240 bringing him back to 522L
As his allowances stand at 2400 with earnings showing £3749 and 2825 with £726 earnings he is still within his tax allowance
How do we get the remaining allowance from Job 2 used in the deficit that has occurred in job 1 from splitting the tax codes or am I right to assume Job 2 will use the new split code and it will pay the tax back already charged
Job 1 wont pay now until April which will be the start of a new tax year , will this be down to them or HMRC to refund ?
Any help would be appreciated as i need to explain the details and get my son to understand as he has to communicate HMRC on Tuesday and not me as I cant speak to them for him

Job 2, if it uses the new code before 5th April, will probably refund the extra tax that he has paid on Job 2 to him.
However Job 1 as it used the new code meant that he had to pay more tax as his allowance was now less.
As we are now at the end of the tax year, there will be no more automatic rebates from HMRC through his pay. He will have to wait until he gets his P60 from both jobs and then apply to HMRC for a rebate.Any help would be appreciated as i need to explain the details and get my son to understand as he has to communicate HMRC on Tuesday and not me as I cant speak to them for him
You will be able to speak to HMRC if you let your son start off the call and then pass to you. I have done this on many occasions for my sons. Just tell him to say that he has a tax query which his mum understands better and can they speak to her instead.0
