  • Depends on the quality you're after, don't want to spend over £1200 to find it's pants ::)

Personally I'd recommend a Panasonic pw6, fantastic value for £1580 (including component board) from av-sales. Can also recommend that company.

This doesn't come with speakers, but a home cinema amp and speakers can be had for good money.

Also doesn't have a tuner, but connected a freeview box (for digital) or a vcr or dvd recorder (for analogue) will solve that problem.

Best bet is to go demo a few screens and see what you think, but I can certainly recommend the panasonic pw6 (attached one to the living room wall last night ;D)

    OK, no. of points:

No tuner is great if you don't have a TV licence, and want to only play DVDs or connect your PC. You are still legal.

So what is the picture quality lke when output from a PC. Is 1280 res readable?

What is the difference between LCD TVs and Plasma? In terms of PC clarity?

Have you thought of renting this equipment, escentual?
Must be better than buying. with the depreciation surely? TV rental firms should rent these?

Finally, if buying, remember to get your friend-with-a-tv-and-tv-licence to pay on their card. They will be asked for their address. You then pay them the money straight back.
That way, TV Licensing has not recorded this particular TV sale.

I found some plasma vs LCD info here:

Johnnypanic is spot on. Panasonic is a real gem at the price. Add on a Humax Freeview Box and you're away, or get a Sky+ and subscription. AV-Sales have excellent reputation. Ebuyer are doing a similar offer and so are Richer ... check what you get with each. I think the Ebuyer offer is the best just now.

As for the advice about how to avoid getting a TV licence ... it's likely you will get caught and it's not the right thing to do. My brother used to be one of those TV guys (honestly!!) and they know every trick. You're getting a service, so pay for it like most of us do ... as I'm sure you intended anyway :-)

If you don't use TV to receive broadcast, and it's not able to, then you don't need a licence ... but the licencing people want to know and they may send someone round to check.

Finally, Plama is better ... in most real cases. The viewing angle on most LCD's is rather limited. Plamsa tends be brighter picture and easier to view.

Check the usb/tv thingy thread for more on TV licences!

I still don't like the idea of paying- I'd rather rent.

Can we get some figures here for plasma TV rental?

    Come on people!
